The final entries for the 2016 Opodo Prix d’Amérique were recorded by LeTROT today (Wednesday 27th), revealing 20 potential contenders. There were no particular surprises for the key players, and the top five favourites have been confirmed by connections: titleholder Up And Quick, Vincennes’ latest star Bold Eagle, Norway’s Lionel, 2015 runner-up Voltigeur de Myrt and evergreen Timoko.
The most notable withdrawal concerns last year’s fourth Uhlan du Val, whose trainer Cédric Mégissier considers he is not in the best of form. His absence means Athos des Elfes is on the match sheet because of the ‘lower-earnings bonus’ 6yos they are allowed when calculating those qualified on prizemoney. Two 5yos are currently well on track with obvious claims: unstoppable Bold Eagle and counterattacker Bird Parker. With just 24 hours to go until the official declaration, it seems likely that the 18 going to post will include 5 foreign-bred runners: Lionel (following an excellent high-grade summer campaign), Moses Rob (benefitting from some last-minute defections), Support Justice, Oasis Bi and Mosaïque Face.
